Fun for Your Whole Flock

Clevelanders, are you looking for a way to bond with nature in a magical way?

Visit Brecksville Nature Center for the opportunity to hand-feed Chickadees and other small birds. The friendly staff provides black sunflower seeds along with tips to help ensure birds will land on your outstretched hand and take your offerings.

This wonderful experience is free and appropriate for all ages. My three-year-old niece put her tiny hand on top of mine, and a bird landed almost immediately and took a seed from her. I’ll never forget the wonder in her eyes.

You can hand-feed the birds tomorrow, December 31 from 10:00 a.m. – noon. Feedings will continue in January and February on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. – noon.

Bonus: We happened upon a Panera in a shopping plaza just outside of the Metroparks. It’s a great place to warm up with a bowl of soup or chili, while talking about your morning with the birds. And trust me, you’ll talk about it for some time to come—it’s an experience you’ll not soon forget.

If excitement causes exhaustion, I’d say our day was a success.

Until next time, be kind to yourself. And each other.
